The Shopify tracking guide

Your ads should hear about every sale Shopify recorded. This is the map to every cause, and every fix.

The short answer

Shopify tracking fails in five usual places: blocked pixels, express checkouts, Safari, lost clicks and bots. The fix is to send each paid order from the server and keep the click on your own domain.

DataCops is a tool that fixes Shopify tracking from a server, so your ads hear about every paid order, not only the ones a browser script managed to report.

How DataCops does it on Shopify:

  • Every paid order, server-side. The DataCops Shopify app listens for Shopify's paid-order webhook and sends each order as a Purchase, with value and currency, to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn. Shop Pay and Apple Pay orders count too.
  • The steps before the sale. Its Web Pixel inside Shopify reports add to cart, checkout, payment info and search.
  • Counted once. The pixel and the server share the same order ID, so a purchase is not counted twice.
  • The click survives Safari. One script and one DNS record collect on your own domain, click IDs are kept on the server for up to 90 days, and a signed server-set cookie lasts up to 400 days where enabled.
  • Real people only. Every visit gets a bot verdict, with a Real people only switch per ad platform (off by default).
  • Proof. A delivery log shows each send as sent, held, skipped or failed, with the reason.

Best for: Shopify stores that run paid ads and want the ad platforms to see the sales Shopify already recorded.

The problem in one picture

Shopify records every order. Your ad platforms record only the ones their browser scripts saw. The gap is lost sales in your reports, and the ad platform learns from the part it saw. Most of the gap has the same few causes: blocked pixels, express checkouts, Safari, a click that was lost, and bots.

How it is set up

  1. Install the DataCops Shopify app. About 5 minutes, no theme code. It adds a Web Pixel and listens for paid orders.
  2. Connect your ad platforms. Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn.
  3. Add the DNS record. One record so collection runs on your own domain.
  4. Check the log. Place a test order and watch it appear as sent.
  5. Warm up new campaigns. Upload past customers with Ads Warmup.

When not to use DataCops

  • You do not run paid ads. Tracking is for feeding ad platforms; with no ads, a native Shopify setup is enough.
  • You only sell in person with Shopify POS. The app sends online paid orders, not POS sales.
  • You want refunds taken back out of Meta or TikTok. A refund marks the Purchase refunded in DataCops and is corrected on Google Ads, not on Meta or TikTok.

FAQ

What is the best way to track Shopify sales for ads?

Send each paid order from Shopify's server to your ad platforms, with a match key, and keep the pixel for the steps before the sale. DataCops does this with one Shopify app.

Why do my ad platforms show fewer sales than Shopify?

Browser pixels miss sales from ad blockers, express checkouts, closed tabs and Safari. Platforms also count only sales they can match to an ad.

Does DataCops work with Shop Pay and Apple Pay?

Yes. The paid order comes from Shopify's order webhook, however the shopper checked out.

Which ad platforms does DataCops send Shopify orders to?

Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn from the same install.

How long does the install take?

About 5 minutes per store, with no theme code.
