Shopify Additional scripts stopped working. What now?

If your order tracking went quiet after Shopify changed checkout, this is the reason. The old way was switched off. Here is the new way.

The short answer

Shopify ended checkout.liquid and Additional scripts on 28 August 2025. Order tracking now has to run as a Web Pixel or through an app. The most reliable replacement sends each paid order from the server.

DataCops is a tool that fixes Shopify tracking from a server, so your ads hear about every paid order, not only the ones a browser script managed to report.

How DataCops does it on Shopify:

  • Every paid order, server-side. The DataCops Shopify app listens for Shopify's paid-order webhook and sends each order as a Purchase, with value and currency, to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn. Shop Pay and Apple Pay orders count too.
  • The steps before the sale. Its Web Pixel inside Shopify reports add to cart, checkout, payment info and search.
  • Counted once. The pixel and the server share the same order ID, so a purchase is not counted twice.
  • The click survives Safari. One script and one DNS record collect on your own domain, click IDs are kept on the server for up to 90 days, and a signed server-set cookie lasts up to 400 days where enabled.
  • Real people only. Every visit gets a bot verdict, with a Real people only switch per ad platform (off by default).
  • Proof. A delivery log shows each send as sent, held, skipped or failed, with the reason.

Best for: Shopify stores that run paid ads and want the ad platforms to see the sales Shopify already recorded.

What changed

For years, store owners pasted conversion code into Additional scripts and checkout.liquid. It ran on the thank-you page. Shopify ended that. Checkout tracking now lives in Web Pixels, which are sandboxed pieces of code that Shopify runs for you, and in apps.

The date to remember is 28 August 2025, when checkout.liquid and Additional scripts stopped being supported. If you never moved your tracking, purchase events could have stopped reaching your ads that day.

How to tell if you are affected

  • Purchases dropped in Meta or Google Ads around late August 2025 while Shopify sales stayed flat.
  • Your tag is only in Additional scripts or an old checkout.liquid, and not in Settings, Customer events.
  • Only some purchases arrive, mostly from shoppers with no ad blocker.

Open Settings, Customer events in Shopify. If your ad pixels are not listed there, they are not running at checkout.

What replaces it

You have three routes.

  1. Platform apps. Shopify's Facebook and Instagram app, and Google's channel app, cover one platform each. Meta's runs through the Conversions API when data sharing is set to Maximum.
  2. A custom pixel. Paste your tag in. It works, but it is still browser code.
  3. One server-side app. It receives each paid order from Shopify and sends it to every platform. This is the route that does not depend on the browser.

DataCops is the third route. It installs from the Shopify app store in about five minutes and needs no theme code. See the Shopify CAPI page.

When not to use DataCops

  • You do not run paid ads. Tracking is for feeding ad platforms; with no ads, a native Shopify setup is enough.
  • You only sell in person with Shopify POS. The app sends online paid orders, not POS sales.
  • You want refunds taken back out of Meta or TikTok. A refund marks the Purchase refunded in DataCops and is corrected on Google Ads, not on Meta or TikTok.

FAQ

Do Additional scripts still work on Shopify?

No for the thank-you and order status pages. Shopify sunset checkout.liquid and Additional scripts on 28 August 2025 and moved checkout tracking to Web Pixels and apps.

What replaced checkout.liquid for tracking?

Shopify Checkout Extensibility and Web Pixels. App pixels and custom pixels are set in Settings, Customer events.

Can I still paste a Meta or Google tag?

You can paste it into a custom pixel, but it runs in the browser and misses blocked shoppers. Sending paid orders from the server needs an app that receives Shopify's order webhook.

How do I track purchases now without code?

Install an app that sends the paid order from the server. The DataCops Shopify app adds a Web Pixel and listens for paid orders, with no theme code.
