Shop Pay and Apple Pay orders are missing from your ads

Your fastest buyers are the ones your ads cannot see. Here is why, and what to do about it.

The short answer

Shop Pay and Apple Pay orders are missed because express checkout finishes before a browser pixel reports. Send the paid order from Shopify's own order event instead, with the order ID and match details.

DataCops is a tool that fixes Shopify tracking from a server, so your ads hear about every paid order, not only the ones a browser script managed to report.

How DataCops does it on Shopify:

  • Every paid order, server-side. The DataCops Shopify app listens for Shopify's paid-order webhook and sends each order as a Purchase, with value and currency, to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn. Shop Pay and Apple Pay orders count too.
  • The steps before the sale. Its Web Pixel inside Shopify reports add to cart, checkout, payment info and search.
  • Counted once. The pixel and the server share the same order ID, so a purchase is not counted twice.
  • The click survives Safari. One script and one DNS record collect on your own domain, click IDs are kept on the server for up to 90 days, and a signed server-set cookie lasts up to 400 days where enabled.
  • Real people only. Every visit gets a bot verdict, with a Real people only switch per ad platform (off by default).
  • Proof. A delivery log shows each send as sent, held, skipped or failed, with the reason.

Best for: Shopify stores that run paid ads and want the ad platforms to see the sales Shopify already recorded.

Why express checkout breaks tracking

A normal checkout loads your pages. Your scripts run on each one. Express checkout does not. The shopper taps once, pays, and lands on a confirmation. There is less page, and less time for a script to run.

Shopify moved checkout tracking into sandboxed Web Pixels, which run in the browser but apart from your theme. Theme code does not run there. A pixel can still be blocked, and a tab can still close early. The order is real. The report is missing.

There is a second loss, and it is the quiet one. The click that brought the shopper in is often gone by the time they pay, because the payment ran on a different step. A Purchase with no click ID and no email is a Purchase Meta may not attach to your ad.

Test it in 5 minutes

  1. Open your store in a clean browser window, no ad blocker.
  2. Click one of your own ads, or add the UTM parameters by hand.
  3. Buy a cheap product with Shop Pay, then another with Apple Pay on a Safari device.
  4. In Events Manager, open the Test events tab. Look for each Purchase, its value and order ID.
  5. Repeat once with an ad blocker on. The difference is what your real shoppers lose.

What fixes it

Stop depending on the browser for the one event that matters. Shopify tells a server the moment an order is paid. Send the Purchase from there, with the order ID, value and currency, and add the match details you have.

  • Send the Purchase from Shopify's order event, not the thank-you page.
  • Keep the pixel for the steps before the sale: add to cart, checkout, payment info.
  • Use the same order ID on both so Meta counts it once.
  • Store the click on the server so it is still there after Safari's 7 day limit.

This is what the DataCops Shopify app does. Read how on the Shopify CAPI page.

When not to use DataCops

  • You do not run paid ads. Tracking is for feeding ad platforms; with no ads, a native Shopify setup is enough.
  • You only sell in person with Shopify POS. The app sends online paid orders, not POS sales.
  • You want refunds taken back out of Meta or TikTok. A refund marks the Purchase refunded in DataCops and is corrected on Google Ads, not on Meta or TikTok.

FAQ

Does Shop Pay break Meta tracking?

It can. Express checkouts finish fast and the browser pixel may not report the step it watches. The order still exists in Shopify, so the fix is to send the paid order from the server.

Are Apple Pay orders tracked by the Meta pixel?

Often yes, sometimes no. It depends on whether the pixel fired before the payment sheet closed. A server send from the order does not depend on that.

How do I check if my Shop Pay orders reach Meta?

Place a test order with Shop Pay, then look in Events Manager for a Purchase with the right value and order ID. If it is missing, or arrives without a match key, the browser path is not enough.

Does DataCops track Shop Pay and Apple Pay?

Yes. The paid order comes from Shopify's order webhook, which fires for every paid order however the shopper checked out.
