Meta attribution in 2026: what changed, and what to do

Two changes this year moved your numbers without moving your sales. Here is what each one means.

The short answer

Meta changed attribution twice in 2026. In January it stopped returning the 7-day and 28-day view-through windows in its Ads Insights API. In March it narrowed click-through to link clicks only and moved shares, saves and likes into a new engage-through category. Reported click-through conversions can fall without your ads getting worse. Judge results against your own revenue, not a single line in Ads Manager.

DataCops is the tracking solution for ad-funded businesses: it keeps the click, filters junk visits, matches the sale and sends it back to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, so your ads learn from real outcomes and not just from what a browser managed to report.

How DataCops covers the attribution chain:

  • It keeps the click. One script and one DNS record collect on your own domain. Click IDs (gclid, wbraid, gbraid, fbclid, ttclid, li_fat_id) stay on the server for up to 90 days, and a signed server-set cookie lasts up to 400 days where enabled.
  • It checks the visit. Every visit gets a bot verdict against an IP database covering 360+ billion IPs, with a Real people only switch per ad platform (off by default), and form emails are checked.
  • It matches the sale. By click ID, or by hashed email and phone, from Shopify orders, HighLevel, any CRM by webhook, or a CSV.
  • It sends the sale back. To Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, counted once against the pixel, with every send in a delivery log.
  • It sends the stages that happen later. Booked, showed, won and paid, so the ad platform learns who becomes a customer.
  • Ads Warmup. Upload past customers (only email is required, up to 20,000 rows), see a 0 to 10 match score, and send them to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok so a new campaign starts with real buyers.

Best for: stores and lead-gen businesses that want the ad platforms themselves to learn from real sales. It is not a reporting dashboard.

Everything on this page about Meta's 2026 changes comes from coverage of Meta's own announcements (ppc.land, Jon Loomer and others), not from Meta's own help pages, which we could not read in full. Check the settings shown in your own account before changing anything.

What counts as a click now

Until March, a "click" in Meta reporting could mean many things: a link click, but also a like, a share or a save. That flattered click-through numbers, because they included people who never reached your site.

After the change, per Meta's announcement as reported by ppc.land, click-through attribution counts only conversions that follow a link click that takes the person to your website or store. That is closer to how Google Analytics counts a paid social session, and it is why some tools expect the gap between Meta and GA4 to narrow, although it will not close.

What advertisers see in Ads Manager: the click-through line can fall. That is a reclassification, not a lost sale. The conversions did not vanish. They moved.

What is engage-through?

Engage-through replaces the old engaged-view idea and holds conversions that follow non-link engagements, such as shares, saves and likes, along with the video engaged-view category. Per the same coverage, the video threshold that qualifies as an engaged view dropped from 10 seconds to 5. It is reported separately, and Meta encourages advertisers to read it next to click-through.

Coverage describes the default setting as 7-day click, 1-day engage-through and 1-day view. Coverage is not consistent on the exact engage-through window, and older guides still show the old defaults, so read the setting your ad sets actually use.

Practically: if your content is Reels or other video, expect more conversions to show under engage-through. If your ads drive link clicks to a landing page, expect click-through to hold up better.

The view-through windows that went away

View-through attribution credits an ad that someone saw but did not click. Meta used to report 1-day, 7-day and 28-day views. From 12 January 2026 the 7-day and 28-day versions stopped coming back through the Ads Insights API, which many reporting tools read from. Reports that depended on them show lower numbers, and some tools remapped those widgets to the 1-day view.

If a dashboard of yours dropped in January with no change in spend, check which view window it used before you suspect your ads.

Incremental attribution

Incremental attribution is a separate, ad set level option. Standard attribution credits every conversion inside the window. Incremental aims to estimate whether the ad actually caused the conversion. Coverage says that once you select it, you cannot edit the attribution settings for that ad set, and that view-through results still appear, filtered to those the ad influenced.

Because it is a different question, do not compare an incremental ad set to a standard one and expect the same count. If you want to measure true lift, see incrementality, marketing mix modelling or attribution.

What to do about it

  1. Compare total results, not one line. Look at click-through and engage-through together, and at your own revenue.
  2. Choose windows by your sales cycle. If people buy after ten days, a seven-day window will drop real sales. See attribution windows on every ad platform.
  3. Re-baseline your reports. Mark the dates of the January and March changes on every chart, so nobody reads a reclassification as a failure.
  4. Make sure Meta is told about the sale. Window changes matter less when the Conversions API sends each sale once, with a click ID and hashed email.
  5. Keep your own count. Store or CRM revenue by source is the check no platform change can touch.

What not to do

  • Do not cut a campaign because click-through fell in March without checking engage-through and revenue.
  • Do not compare 2026 click-through to 2025 and call the difference performance.
  • Do not switch an ad set to incremental attribution mid-test and compare it to a standard one.
  • Do not assume an older guide's "default" matches your account.

For the full picture, read the complete attribution guide, and for stores Meta shows fewer purchases than Shopify.

What else the same install does

The attribution chain is one part of a wider setup. Collection runs on your own domain with one script and one DNS record; with your DNS on Cloudflare, the free, optional DataCops Cloudflare Worker reads click IDs and UTMs at the edge before the page runs, and it captures without blocking. On Shopify, the DataCops Shopify app sends every paid order from Shopify's server. A first-party consent manager built on IAB TCF v2.2 and first-party analytics, a GA4 alternative, come from the same script. Each form email is checked for disposable providers and domains with no mail server, and LeadCops can enforce those rules on a form. Every send appears in a delivery log with the reason it was sent, held, skipped or failed.

FAQ

Why did my Meta click-through conversions drop in 2026?

Per Meta's March 2026 announcement as reported by ppc.land, click-through attribution now counts only conversions that follow a link click. Conversions from shares, saves and likes moved into a separate engage-through category. The total can be unchanged while the click-through line falls.

What is engage-through attribution on Meta?

A category that holds conversions following engagements that are not link clicks, such as shares, saves and likes, and the video engaged-view category. It is reported separately from click-through.

Were the 7-day and 28-day view windows removed?

From 12 January 2026 Meta stopped returning the 7-day and 28-day view-through windows in the Ads Insights API, according to coverage of the change. Click windows and the 1-day view window remain. Historical data was not deleted.

What is the current default attribution setting on Meta?

Coverage of the changes describes it as 7-day click, 1-day engage-through and 1-day view. Some older guides still say 7-day click and 1-day view, so check what your own ad sets show.

What is incremental attribution?

An ad set option that aims to count only conversions an ad actually influenced, not all conversions that follow an ad. Coverage says that once selected, you cannot edit the attribution settings for that ad set.

Should I change my campaigns because of the drop?

Not on the click-through number alone. Compare total results and your own store or CRM revenue before and after, using a window that has closed.

Does the Conversions API change with these updates?

The basics stay the same: send each sale from your server with matching data and a shared event ID. A cleaner signal matters more when platforms re-draw their windows.
