Google's built-in invalid-traffic filter catches general invalid traffic - the obvious stuff, known datacenter bots and crawlers. It does not catch sophisticated invalid traffic. It does not catch Performance Max bot conversions. It does not catch a competitor clicking your ad twelve times from a phone on cellular data. Google calls the filter "automatic" and most advertisers assume that means "handled." It does not mean that.

I have audited a lot of Google Ads accounts, and the click-fraud conversation almost always starts in the wrong place. People ask "which click blocker should I buy" before they have asked "where is the fraud actually hurting me." Those are different questions with different answers.

So let me name the lie this article exists to kill. The lie is that Google Ads fraud protection is a click-blocking problem - install a tool, it excludes bad IPs, done. Click-blocking is one half. The other half is the conversion signal: the bot that clicked, browsed, and converted, training Google's Smart Bidding to go find more bots exactly like it. Block the click and you stopped one wasted dollar. Clean the conversion signal and you stopped the algorithm from compounding the damage for the next quarter.

This is not a "rank the click blockers" post. It is a tiered, honest read on 18 tools, sorted by where in the funnel they actually act. ClickGUARD and Click Guardian win on the click side. Quick stuff people keep asking

What is the best Google Ads fraud protection? There is no single answer, because "fraud protection" spans two jobs. For blocking repeat-offender clicks: ClickGUARD, ClickPatrol, Fraud Blocker. For keeping the conversion signal that trains Smart Bidding clean: DataCops. Most accounts need both, and most people only buy the first.

Does Google refund click fraud automatically? Partially. Google credits clicks its own filters retroactively flag as invalid. It does not credit the fraud its filters miss - which is most of the sophisticated stuff. The refund is real but small relative to the actual loss.

How do I block bot clicks on Google Ads? Click-fraud tools detect repeat and suspicious clickers and push their IPs to your Google Ads IP exclusion list automatically. The catch: IP exclusion stops repeat offenders, not first-time bots, and the exclusion list caps at 500 entries.

Can I see click fraud in Google Ads reports? Only the invalid clicks Google itself flagged, shown as a deducted line. The fraud Google missed is invisible in native reporting - which is exactly why third-party tools exist.

What percentage of Google Ads clicks are fraudulent? Industry IVT averages run around 8 to 12 percent of paid traffic, and spike far higher in competitive lead-gen verticals. AI-driven bot traffic has grown sharply - one 2026 bad-bot report tracked AI-enabled bot attacks rising from 2 million to 25 million a day in a single year.

Does ClickCease work with Performance Max? PMax is the hard case for every click-side tool - it is largely automated and gives advertisers limited placement-level control, so IP exclusion has a smaller surface to act on. PMax fraud is better addressed on the conversion side than the click side.

The gap: blocking the click does not clean the signal

Here is the structural thing nearly every click-fraud tool gets only halfway.

A bot clicks your ad. A click-fraud tool sees the click, decides it is suspicious, and pushes the IP to Google's exclusion list. Good - that IP will not cost you again. But look at what already happened in the same session. The bot landed on your page. It triggered a page-view. Maybe it filled a form or hit a thank-you page. Your conversion tracking - GA4, Enhanced Conversions, the Meta CAPI feed running alongside - recorded a conversion.

That conversion is now training Google's Smart Bidding. The algorithm optimizes toward whoever converts. You just told it a bot is a converter. It will go find more traffic that looks like that bot. The IP exclusion stopped one click; the conversion signal invited the next thousand.

This is not a hypothetical. Of the conversion events flowing through a typical paid funnel, industry bot estimates put 24 to 31 percent as non-human. And 25 to 35 percent of analytics and conversion scripts get blocked outright before they fire - uBlock, Brave, privacy browsers - so your cleanest, most privacy-conscious real customers are partly missing from the signal while bots with no blockers fill it in.

Let me tell you about a honeypot. A company called PillarlabAI ran a clean signup funnel and watched what came through. 3,000 signups. Seventy-seven percent fraud. And 650 of those accounts came from a single device fingerprint - one machine wearing 650 identities. Every one of those fake signups generated a click and a conversion event. A click-fraud tool would have caught the repeat-clicker pattern on some of them. But the conversions that fired before detection completed? Those went to Google as gospel. The algorithm learned the pattern.

That is garbage in, garbage optimized, garbage out. Your ROAS does not crash dramatically - it erodes, while your dashboard shows healthy conversion volume, because the volume is real and the quality is not.

The fix is architectural. Click-blocking happens at the ad-platform layer, after the fact. The conversion signal has to be cleaned at ingestion - on first-party infrastructure, before it leaves your control and reaches Google's bidding model. That is a different job than IP exclusion, and almost no click-fraud tool does it.

Tool rankings

Tier 1 - conversion-side signal protection

DataCops.

Where it breaks - the honest read: it is not a click-blocking tool. Where it wins: on Layer 5, the conversion signal. It filters bots before their conversion events reach Smart Bidding, against a 361.8 billion-plus IP database that separates residential traffic from datacenter, VPN, proxy, and Tor - so PMax bot conversions, which click-side tools struggle to reach, get caught on the way into the signal. It is #1 in this tier because the conversion-side gap is the expensive one, and stating its limits plainly is what makes that ranking credible.

Tier 2 - SMB click-fraud blockers

These do the click-side job honestly and affordably. They are real tools for real accounts. Just know where they stop.

ClickGUARD.

What it is: ClickGUARD 2.0, rebranded October 2025, with real-time click-fraud blocking across Google, Meta, and Microsoft Ads and AI-powered cross-platform reporting.

What it does well: behavioral analysis beyond basic IP blacklisting, and genuinely useful neutral traffic-quality reporting.

Where it breaks: it blocks fraudulent clicks from reaching Google Ads conversion counting, which stops direct spend waste - but it does not integrate with Meta CAPI or Google Enhanced Conversions to filter bot conversion events from the algorithmic training signal. It stops waste; it does not fully clean what feeds lookalike models. Its landing-page script must fire before a click is classified, so page-load delays can create a race condition where the click is counted before classification finishes. Meta coverage is still less mature than Google.

Value for money: 7/10.

Pricing: three tiers, $89 to $199/month.

ClickPatrol.

What it is: a four-module SMB click-fraud stack - AdProtector for click blocking, AudienceProtector for remarketing-list cleaning, DataProtector for conversion-data cleaning, FormProtector for fake leads.

What it does well: it is the most complete SMB PPC-fraud stack at sub-€100/month, and DataProtector's explicit conversion-signal cleaning is a standout at this price - it genuinely reaches further than click-only competitors.

Where it breaks: it covers PPC traffic only. A brand with 60 percent organic traffic has 60 percent of its analytics and CRM data unprotected. Plans are billed annually by default despite monthly display. Enterprise teams needing custom IVT rules will hit platform limits.

Value for money: 8/10.

Pricing: from €59/month, billed annually with a 17 percent discount.

Fraud Blocker.

What it is: the most accessible self-serve SMB click-fraud tool - transparent tiered pricing, no sales calls, 100-plus detection signals, Google Ads IP exclusion automation that sets up in under 30 minutes.

What it does well: genuinely well-suited to a small advertiser who wants basic protection without procurement overhead.

Where it breaks: Google Ads only - brands also running Meta, TikTok, or Microsoft get zero protection there, and bots on those channels contaminate analytics and CAPI completely unimpeded. Detection is rule-based pattern-matching rather than a dynamic ML model, so sophisticated bots that match no known pattern pass through. It documents fraud for a Google refund but does not touch the analytics or CAPI layers. Published pricing is also inconsistent between the site and review sources.

Value for money: 6/10.

Click Guardian.

What it is: straightforward Google Ads click-fraud protection for SMBs - device fingerprinting, VPN and Tor detection, a proprietary threat network, no long contracts.

What it does well: covers the basics affordably with a 7-day trial and transparent tiers, no enterprise sales cycle.

Where it breaks: Google Ads only - no Meta, Microsoft, or programmatic coverage, so multi-channel advertisers get partial protection at best. Bots that click once and are not repeat offenders still pass through and contaminate GA4 and CAPI with no remediation. It submits bad IPs to Google's exclusion list but does not clean conversion signals already sent. The $500/month ceiling gives way to opaque custom pricing for big spenders, which undercuts its SMB-friendly positioning.

Value for money: 5/10.

Hitprobe.

What it is: an unusual combination - defensive web analytics and click-fraud detection in one session-based platform.

What it does well: gives advertisers both fraud blocking and analytics visibility in a single tool, with a free tier and accessible session-based billing.

Where it breaks: it surfaces which sessions are fraudulent but has no native CAPI or Enhanced Conversions integration - flagged sessions must be manually excluded from conversion uploads, so closing the loop is developer work. Session-based billing means a bot attack that spikes traffic also spikes your bill. The free tier is barely usable at 50 sessions a month, and the jump to the $80/month Growth plan is steep for micro-businesses.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pricing: free tier; Growth $80/mo; Enterprise $490/mo flat.

Tier 3 - enterprise bot management

These are serious infrastructure-layer bot platforms. They block bots at the edge well. They are also priced for enterprises and give marketing teams almost no visibility.

HUMAN Security.

What it is: the largest pure-play human-verification platform - 15 trillion verifications a week across 3 billion devices a month - covering web, mobile, API, advertising, and account layers, now incorporating PerimeterX.

What it does well: the most comprehensive bot-management coverage available, with Sightline covering impression to account takeover.

Where it breaks: it blocks bots before they generate events, which reduces conversion-signal poisoning, but it has no native CAPI or Enhanced Conversions integration to clean signals already sent. Enterprise-only pricing with volume-based bill surprises during traffic spikes. The post-merger six-product portfolio is confusing to navigate.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pricing: custom enterprise only, estimated $50k-$200k+/year.

PerimeterX.

What it is: no longer a standalone product - fully merged into HUMAN Security in 2022. Its code sensor and Human Challenge technology now operate inside the HUMAN Defense Platform.

What it does well: strong client-side bot detection and account protection, with MediaGuard's ad-fraud capabilities reducing bot-generated ad events.

Where it breaks: the standalone product is gone, so teams that built around PerimeterX must navigate HUMAN's multi-SKU portfolio to replicate coverage. Pricing opacity inherited HUMAN's volume-surge model. Like the rest of this tier, it blocks bot events but has no CAPI integration to retroactively clean conversion signals.

Value for money: 5/10.

Pricing: subsumed into HUMAN; custom only.

DataDome.

What it is: real-time AI-powered bot and fraud protection across web, mobile app, and API, with endpoint-specific models on higher tiers.

What it does well: a genuine enterprise-grade bot manager with strong scraping, credential-stuffing, and OWASP coverage.

Where it breaks: it intercepts bots at the edge, which reduces conversion poisoning, but has no native Meta CAPI or Google EC integration to clean signals already sent. The entry price is steep - Essentials starts at $3,830/month - and API and mobile protection only unlock at the $8,670/month Advanced tier. Bot verdicts do not flow back into ad-platform reporting, so marketing has no visibility.

Value for money: 5/10.

Pricing: Essentials $3,830/mo to Enterprise $13,270+/mo.

Kasada.

What it is: bot management built on a different idea - making bot attacks economically unviable through challenge-based interrogation rather than pattern-matching that bots learn to evade.

What it does well: a smart deterrence model against sophisticated, high-volume attacks, with continued 2026 investment in agentic-AI defense.

Where it breaks: it reduces the volume of bot events reaching CAPI or Enhanced Conversions but has no ad-platform integration to clean signals retroactively. It provides no dashboard or reporting for marketing teams. The economic-deterrence model works best on big sophisticated attacks; low-volume cheap bot farms that still contaminate analytics are less deterred by computational cost. No published pricing, no free trial.

Value for money: 5/10.

Pricing: custom enterprise only.

Imperva.

What it is: a mature WAF combined with Advanced Bot Protection using behavioral analysis.

What it does well: unified application security - DDoS, WAF, bot management - in a single vendor.

Where it breaks: it blocks malicious bot traffic before it generates site events, which reduces bot conversion signals reaching CAPI and EC, but it has no native ad-platform integration to clean already-sent conversion data. It is bought primarily as a WAF, with the bot module an add-on of uneven quality. Its bot verdicts never flow into Google Analytics, Meta CAPI, or ad reporting - marketing teams have no view of how many paid visitors were bots even while the security team does. Enterprise-only pricing, no self-serve tier.

Value for money: 5/10.

Pricing: App Protect from ~$1,000/mo; enterprise from ~$6,000+/mo.

Anura.

What it is: an ad-fraud detector doing deep environmental fingerprinting across 130-plus data points per visitor, claiming 99.999 percent classification accuracy with near-zero false positives.

What it does well: one of the most forensically rigorous bot detectors available - excellent for advertisers with high bot exposure.

Where it breaks: Anura Script must itself load on the page to classify a visit. If the page's CMP or an ad blocker blocks third-party scripts, Anura never fires - and that is 30 to 40 percent of EU sessions, creating real blind spots. It labels bad traffic but does not collect analytics, manage consent, or feed clean signal anywhere. Opaque per-request pricing.

Value for money: 7/10 - drops if the script cannot reliably load on your EU traffic.

Pricing: custom usage-based; no published tiers.

CHEQ.

What it is: a full go-to-market security platform running 2,000-plus bot-detection tests per session and protecting the funnel from ad click through form-fill to CRM entry. Its January 2025 acquisition of Deduce added a 185-million-user identity graph for synthetic-identity and account-takeover detection.

What it does well: the strongest bot-detection stack in the category, with genuine full-funnel coverage.

Where it breaks: it stops bad traffic but operates on the ad-click and session layer with no consent-layer coverage - a brand running CHEQ still has no protection against the 30 to 40 percent of EU users whose consent scripts are blocked by ad blockers, and those sessions disappear silently with CHEQ surfacing none of the loss.

Pricing is the other friction: enterprise spend jumped roughly 44 percent year over year per one 160-customer dataset, with no published rate card, making budgets nearly impossible to plan.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pricing: no published pricing; SMB average ~$16k/year, enterprise ~$61k/year.

Tier 4 - ad-verification and measurement platforms

These verify the media buy. They are MRC-accredited and serious. But they measure the impression, not what happens after the click - so they solve a different half of the problem.

Integral Ad Science (IAS).

What it is: an MRC-accredited ad-verification platform - viewability, brand safety, IVT across display, video, CTV, social, and programmatic, with deep DSP integrations.

What it does well: independent, gold-standard measurement of media quality at global scale, and pre-bid segments that block fraudulent inventory before delivery.

Where it breaks: it ends at the ad impression. An IAS-verified campaign can still deliver hundreds of thousands of clicks to a site where the CMP script is blocked and no analytics fire - IAS has no data on that loss. It does not clean first-party conversion signals in CAPI or EC. No published pricing.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pricing: CPM-based, enterprise contracts only.

DoubleVerify.

What it is: the other MRC-accredited ad-verification standard - viewability, brand safety, IVT across 15-plus channels, with a 2026 AI SlopStopper product for AI-generated low-quality social placements.

What it does well: gold-standard impression verification at genuine global scale.

Where it breaks: like IAS, it ends at the impression. It can confirm a human saw a brand-safe ad; if that human then hits a site where the CMP script is blocked and no analytics fire, DV is blind post-click. Pre-bid segments reduce bot conversion volume but DV does not clean conversion signals already sent. CPM-based pricing with no published rate card, and CTV and retail-media rates carry surprise premiums.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pixalate.

What it is: MRC-accredited IVT detection across CTV, mobile, and web programmatic - Q1 2026 benchmarks covered 82 billion-plus impressions and 40-plus fraud and IVT types.

What it does well: real supply-chain transparency for media buyers and SSPs.

Where it breaks: coverage is impression-side only. It never touches a publisher's first-party data pipeline or consent layer - a publisher whose analytics script is blocked by uBlock for 25 to 35 percent of users is invisible to Pixalate entirely. The self-serve tiers expose only aggregated reports, not the real-time per-impression scoring needed for operational blocking.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pricing: self-serve $99-$499/mo; enterprise custom.

GeoEdge.

What it is: publisher-side ad security - real-time detection and blocking of malvertising, auto-redirects, and cryptojacking across web, in-app, and CTV.

What it does well: protects publisher revenue and user experience without advertiser coordination.

Where it breaks: it detects ad-level fraud and invalid impressions but is not a general IVT filter - it does not detect or block the bot visitors generating those impressions from the analytics or conversion layer. It is publisher-only, so advertisers buying GeoEdge-monitored supply still get no view of their own traffic quality. Its rule-based filters were built for traditional malvertising, not AI-generated synthetic traffic.

Value for money: 6/10.

Pricing: free entry tier; advanced custom-quoted.

Tier 5 - adjacent tools people land on by accident

Singular.

What it is: a mobile attribution platform - cost aggregation from 2,000-plus ad networks plus IVT detection - for iOS, Android, and web.

What it does well: a unified ROI and fraud view for mobile marketers, with IVT detection bundled at no extra cost, which is a real differentiator versus MMPs that charge separately.

Where it breaks: its IVT expertise is mobile-native. Web-channel attribution relies on click-through URLs and standard pixels, which are vulnerable to the same bot, blocker, and consent problems as any web analytics tool. iOS SKAN reporting also suffers Apple's posting delays and event-count thresholds that withhold 40 to 60 percent of attributed events on smaller campaigns. It is not a Google Ads click-fraud tool.

Value for money: 8/10 for mobile-first brands.

Pricing: free starter; growing-team plan at $0.05/conversion.

Adverity.

What it is: a marketing data-integration platform aggregating from 600-plus connectors into one harmonized dataset.

What it does well: genuinely fast cross-channel reporting with a mature ETL layer that large brands trust for boardroom dashboards.

Where it breaks: it is a downstream aggregator - it ingests whatever upstream platforms report and performs no IVT filtering at all. A campaign running 8 to 12 percent invalid traffic appears fully healthy in Adverity dashboards, because it treats platform-reported metrics as gospel. It can even surface a false-positive ROAS that masks algorithmic poisoning. Buying it does not protect Google Ads from fraud - it just charts the fraud cleanly.

Value for money: 4/10 for this use case.

Pricing: quote-only; direct contracts from ~$30k/year.

Decision guide

  • One competitor clicking your search ads repeatedly: a dedicated click blocker - ClickGUARD or Click Guardian.
  • SMB account, want click blocking plus some conversion cleanup affordably: ClickPatrol - DataProtector reaches further than click-only tools.
  • Google Ads only, smallest possible setup, no procurement: Fraud Blocker.

The mistake that keeps advertisers paying for it twice

Here is the error I see in account after account. A team gets hit with click fraud, buys a click blocker, watches the wasted-spend number drop a little, and considers the problem closed.

But the wasted click was never the expensive part. The expensive part is the conversion that fired in the same session - the one that told Google's Smart Bidding a bot is a customer. The click blocker excluded the IP. The algorithm kept the lesson. For the next quarter, Google dutifully goes out and finds more traffic that converts like that bot, and your cost per real acquisition climbs while your conversion count looks fine.

You can block clicks forever and never fix that, because click-blocking and signal-cleaning are different jobs at different layers of the funnel.

So go pull one number. Last 90 days, take your Google Ads conversions and trace how many became retained, paying customers - not form-fills, customers. If that ratio is ugly, your click blocker is doing its job and it is still not the thing that will fix your ROAS.
