Meta ads attribution and GA4 do not match: why do the numbers differ?

Short answer

Different windows, attribution models and coverage mean a gap is normal. Tag consistently, compare trends and take revenue from the store or CRM.

They are measuring different things in different ways, so they will not match. Meta counts conversions it attributes to its own ads using its own windows and its own view of the user. GA4 counts sessions and conversions by its own rules and credits by its own model. A gap is normal. The useful question is whether the gap is stable and explainable.

Here are the main reasons. Attribution windows differ: Meta can credit a conversion to an ad that someone saw or clicked within its window, while GA4 usually credits by session source. Meta includes view-through attribution in some settings and GA4 generally does not.

Next, the unit differs. Meta reports conversions it attributes to ads. GA4 reports events on your site and credits channels by its model. A purchase that Meta attributes to an ad may be credited to direct or organic in GA4, because the user came back later through another route.

Also, measurement coverage differs. GA4 depends on its script loading and on consent, so blockers and declined consent create gaps. Meta's pixel has the same problem, and the server copy covers some of it. The two will lose different visitors.

Third, tagging errors. UTMs missing from links, auto-tagging disabled, internal traffic not filtered and duplicate tags all create mismatches that have nothing to do with attribution.

Use the right reference. For revenue and orders, the store or CRM is the source of truth. Use Meta's numbers to understand how Meta sees its own contribution, use GA4 for site behaviour and cross-channel patterns, and compare trends instead of totals.

To reduce confusion, tag every ad with consistent UTMs, check that the pixel and the server copy are deduplicated, and compare the same windows. A weekly table with store orders, Meta purchases and GA4 purchases shows the typical ratio, and a change in that ratio is a sign to investigate.

DataCops helps on the data side: first-party analytics, a GA4 alternative, collected on your own domain and showing the same real-people traffic your ads learn from, with a bot verdict on every visit, and a delivery log of what was sent to each platform. It does not make the platforms agree.

Which window and attribution setting are you using in Meta and in GA4?

DataCops in short

For this question: DataCops provides first-party analytics collected on your own domain, with a bot verdict on every visit, and a delivery log of what each platform received.

DataCops is a tool that does the ad-conversion job without a container, warehouse or plugin: one script and one DNS record on your own domain, a bot verdict on every visit with a Real people only switch per ad platform, the real sale from your CRM or Shopify sent back to your ads, new campaigns warmed up with the customers you already have, and a log of every send.

How DataCops does it

  • First-party collection, no extra tool. One script and one DNS record put collection on your own subdomain; with DNS on Cloudflare, the free Worker reads the click at the edge before the page loads. A signed server-set cookie lasts up to 400 days where enabled.
  • Real people only. Every visit gets a bot verdict, with a Real people only switch per ad platform, off by default. Every form email is checked for disposable providers, domains with no mail server and an email risk score.
  • Every ad platform. Conversions go server-side to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, counted once against the pixel by event ID.
  • The sale after the form. HighLevel natively, any CRM by webhook, Shopify through the DataCops Shopify app.
  • A log you can read. A delivery log row per conversion, with the reason when it did not go. A TCF 2.2 consent banner and first-party analytics (a GA4 alternative) come from the same script.

Best for: teams who want better ad conversions without building or maintaining the pipe: lead gen, ecommerce, clinics, home services, B2B and agencies.

Ads Warmup: tell the ads who pays

Ads Warmup, DataCops' flagship feature, sends customers you already have to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok before a new campaign spends: upload a CSV (only email is required, up to 20,000 rows), see a 0 to 10 match score per person, pick the event, and send. Rows are dated when you send, and Google Ads credits only people who clicked a Google ad. Preview is free; sending needs a paid plan. Check your own consent basis for the list first. See Ads Warmup.

When not to use DataCops

  • You need custom tag logic or non-ad destinations. DataCops sends to ad platforms and is not a Google Tag Manager container.
  • You want a reporting dashboard. DataCops fixes what goes into your ads. It does not replace the reports you already read.

Create a small weekly table: orders, Meta purchases, GA4 purchases. After a month you will know your normal ratio.
