Can you steer Meta and Google by choosing which events you send? How far does that really go?

Short answer

Choose the highest stage with enough volume, send clean matched events inside each platform's window, and report real values.

You can steer them a lot, because they optimise for what you tell them counts, but the steering has limits. You choose the goal and the quality of the signal. You do not choose who sees the ad or what the platform decides to do with it.

What you control is the event and its value. If you send a lead, the platform looks for leads. If you send a purchase with a value, it looks for higher-value purchases. If you send booked or paid, it looks for people who look like those. That is the main lever, and it works because the system is trying to hit whatever target you give it.

A useful way to think about it is a ladder. The top rung is a sale with its real revenue. Below it come paid, showed, booked, qualified and lead. Optimise on the highest rung that still has enough volume, and send the lower rungs as secondary signals so the system has more to learn from.

Quality matters as much as choice. Events with a click ID or a hashed email and phone are easier for the platform to match to a person, and so more useful. Events that arrive late, duplicated or from bots weaken the signal. Sending fewer, cleaner events often beats sending more.

Timing matters too. Platforms accept events only within limits: Google Ads uploads within 90 days of the click, with 63 for enhanced conversions for leads, and Meta rejects events more than 7 days old. A stage that arrives outside the window teaches nothing.

The limits are real. You cannot make a platform show your ad to a specific person by sending an event about them. You cannot force it to stop spending on poor placements purely through events. Delivery, auctions and creative still do most of the work. And a very low volume of events makes the system noisy whatever you send.

Do not try to be clever with values. Inflating or inventing values to push the system toward certain products can backfire when the numbers no longer match reality. Report real revenue and let the system optimise towards it.

DataCops supports steering by sending each CRM stage as its own event matched to the click, counted once, with a Real people only switch per platform to keep bots out, and the value you record. It does not guess values or invent events.

What is the deepest stage you currently send, and how many of them do you get a week?

DataCops in short

For this question: DataCops sends each CRM stage as its own event matched to the click, counted once, with a Real people only switch per platform and the value you record.

DataCops is a tool that counts every paid order once on every ad platform: the DataCops Shopify app reads the paid order from Shopify's own order webhook and a Web Pixel reports the shopping steps, with a bot verdict on every visit and a log of every send.

How DataCops does it

  • The paid order from the server. It comes from Shopify's order webhook, so Shop Pay, Apple Pay and closed tabs still count.
  • Counted once. The pixel and the server share an event ID, and the same order ID twice counts once.
  • Every ad platform. Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn are live, with more connectable.
  • Real people only. A bot verdict on every visit, with a switch per platform, off by default.
  • A log you can read. Each send as sent, held, skipped or failed, with the reason.

Best for: Shopify and other online stores that want paid orders counted once on every ad platform, and CRM or phone sales counted too.

Ads Warmup: tell the ads who pays

Ads Warmup, DataCops' flagship feature, sends customers you already have to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok before a new campaign spends: upload a CSV (only email is required, up to 20,000 rows), see a 0 to 10 match score per person, pick the event, and send. Rows are dated when you send, and Google Ads credits only people who clicked a Google ad. Preview is free; sending needs a paid plan. Check your own consent basis for the list first. See Ads Warmup.

Ways to do this job

OptionBest for
DataCopsPaid orders to every ad platform, with a bot verdict and a log
Shopify's Facebook and Instagram appOne Meta pixel and server events on Shopify, Meta only
A store tracking app (such as Elevar)A managed data layer for a Shopify store
Hosted server GTM (such as Stape)A team that already owns a GTM container

When not to use DataCops

  • Your only ad platform is Meta and your store is small. Shopify's own Facebook and Instagram app at Maximum data sharing may be enough.
  • You need custom tag logic. DataCops sends to ad platforms and is not a Google Tag Manager container.

Pick one campaign and move one step up the ladder for four weeks. Change nothing else.
