The short answer
Google tag gateway fixes how Google's tags travel. DataCops is the tracking solution for ad-funded businesses: it keeps bots out of what your ads learn from and sends the sale that happens after the form to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn.
- DataCops: best for advertisers who run more than Google. One script sends first-party to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, with a bot verdict on every visit and CRM stages sent to your ads.
- Stape: best for hosting server-side GTM, with a custom loader that serves GTM from your domain.
- Addingwell: best for server-side GTM with people to call.
- TAGGRS: best for cheaper server-side GTM hosting in the EU.
- Elevar: best for Shopify stores that sell online.
Google tag gateway is Google's free answer to ad blockers. Your Google tag loads from your own domain, the hits go through your domain, and fewer of them get lost. On Cloudflare it is a few clicks. If you run only Google Ads, it is hard to argue with.
Most advertisers do not run only Google. And lost hits are one problem out of five. This guide is about the other four.
You moved Google, only Google
Here is what the gateway actually changes. Before, your browser called a Google domain to load the tag and send hits. After, it calls your own domain, and your CDN passes the hits on to Google. Same tag, same data, new route.
That is a transport fix. DataCops is first-party from your own subdomain too, so the route alone is not the difference. What the gateway leaves exactly where it was:
- Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn are untouched. Their pixels still load from their own domains and still get blocked. Each needs its own Conversions API work.
- Bots still count. The gateway forwards whatever the Google tag sends. A bot that fills your form is a conversion, delivered more reliably.
- Consent is still your wiring. You still need a banner and Consent Mode. A first-party route does not replace consent.
- The sale never arrives. The booked call and the won deal happen in your CRM. The gateway only sees your website.
Server-side is the transport, not the product. Google made its own transport better, for free, and that is good. The rest of the chain is still yours to build. The same argument runs through our Google Tag Manager alternatives and server-side GTM alternatives guides.
Google tag gateway gets Google's data home safely. It does not check who sent it, and it does not tell Meta anything.
What's your actual goal?
Nobody wants a gateway. You want five things:
- Capture every lead and sale, including the ones ad blockers and Safari hide.
- Send them to your ad platforms, so Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn learn who buys.
- Include the sales that happen offline, on a call, in a clinic, in your CRM.
- Keep bots out, so the platforms do not learn from fake leads.
- Stay compliant, with consent checked and data deleted on request.
The gateway helps with half of the first goal, for one platform. DataCops does all five. Here is the same goal, done both ways.
The traditional way, with Google tag gateway
- Move your domain to Cloudflare or another supported CDN, if it is not there.
- Turn on the gateway from the Google tag or GTM screen.
- Set up the Meta Conversions API separately.
- Set up the TikTok Events API and LinkedIn Conversions API separately.
- Buy a consent banner and wire Consent Mode into every tag.
- Find a way to keep bots out, or accept them.
- Build a CRM flow for offline sales, per platform.
- Maintain all of it every time a platform changes.
With DataCops
- Add one script and one DNS record.
- Connect Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn with one click each.
- Switch on the consent manager.
- Switch on Real people only.
- Connect HighLevel or your CRM webhook.
- Switch on health mode if you need it.
Then run your business. Click IDs, consent and the delivery log are handled for you.
The gateway fixes one pipe for one platform. DataCops does the job, so you can focus on what actually makes money.
The real cost of a free tool
Google tag gateway costs $0. That is its best feature, and we mean it. The real cost is in everything it does not cover. Answer these with your own numbers.
How many hours will it take to build your Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn server-side setup, consent wiring and CRM flow before the first sale is tracked?
How many hours a month will someone spend keeping it working when Meta, Google or TikTok change something?
If a tag breaks quietly for a week, how many leads never reach your ads? And what is one lead worth to you?
How many sales a month close in your CRM that your ads never hear about?
The last question matters most. When the ads only see form fills, they learn to find more people who fill in forms, not people who buy. A free gateway that delivers every form fill to Google, bots included, makes that lesson louder.
Free tracking is the most expensive line in your ad budget. It just does not send you the invoice.
Why people look past Google tag gateway
Nobody leaves the gateway because it is bad. People look past it because it answers a smaller question than theirs.
- They run Meta. For many advertisers Meta is the bigger budget, and the gateway does nothing for it.
- It needs the right CDN. Cloudflare is one click. Anywhere else, it is a project or a server-side setup.
- Bots get the same free ride. A more reliable route for real hits is a more reliable route for fake ones.
- Consent is still separate. Another vendor, another banner, Consent Mode in every tag.
- The sale is missing. Google learns from the form, not from the deal.
- No record of what was sent. There is no per-conversion log of what went, what was held and why.
The real difference: the whole chain, not one link
Here is what that means in practice, one job at a time.
Every platform, first-party
The gateway makes Google first-party. Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn still call their own domains from the browser, and each one needs its own server-side setup to get through.
DataCops sends to all four from one script on your own subdomain. You connect Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, and every event gets a row in the delivery log that says what happened.
Every visit gets a verdict
The gateway forwards hits. It does not ask who made them. We found no bot filtering in Google's gateway docs.
DataCops checks every visit for bots, datacenter traffic, VPNs and proxies, and turns it into one switch per ad platform (see click fraud protection). Turn on Real people only and about 99% of bots stay out of that platform. It is off by default, so you choose where it applies. Every bot lead Google receives is a lead it goes looking for more of.
The sale happens after the form
For a clinic, an agency or a B2B team, the money comes later: the booked call, the patient who showed up, the deal marked won. The gateway sees the website, so Google never hears about any of it.
DataCops is built around that moment. Install it once on your HighLevel agency and pick the clients. Form leads, booked calls, show-ups, won deals with their value and paid invoices then go to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, matched to the ad click. Any other CRM posts the sale to a private webhook, directly or through Zapier, Make or n8n. Cancellations, no-shows and lost deals are never sent.
Consent is built in
The gateway changes where the tag loads from, not whether you are allowed to load it. You still bring a consent banner and set up Consent Mode. DataCops includes a first-party consent manager built on IAB TCF v2.2, served from your own domain, and events wait for consent before they are sent.
Clicks are remembered
The gateway keeps whatever cookies the Google tag sets. There is no click store of its own. DataCops keeps click IDs for 90 days and a visitor cookie on your subdomain for up to 400 days. Every ad click also lands in a click log in first-party analytics. In the EU a longer cookie still needs consent, which the built-in consent manager checks first.
You can see why each event was sent
With the gateway, you check Google's own reports and hope. DataCops writes every conversion as a row per platform (sent, held, skipped or failed) with the reason next to it.
Privacy and data deletion are built in
Visitors can ask for deletion through a form on your privacy page: they confirm by email, their session data is anonymised, and a status page shows what was done. Deletion requests from Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn are acted on automatically. Click IDs, sessions and the click log are deleted after 90 days, and the identity store holds hashed emails and phones only. Google Ads deletions are still a manual step on your side. The gateway has none of this. It is a route, not a data store.
The gateway tells Google the hit arrived. DataCops tells you whether it should have.
Offline conversions: what no gateway can see
Most businesses do not sell on the website. The website collects the lead. The money comes later, and that later moment is what your ads need to learn from.
| Business | What the Google tag sees | What DataCops adds |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics, dental, med spa | Booking form | Booked, showed, treatment paid |
| Home services, roofing, solar | Quote request | Estimate booked, job won with its value |
| Agencies running client ads | Form fills per client | Every client's booked, showed, won and paid |
| B2B and SaaS | Demo request, signup | Qualified lead, trial, paid, by webhook |
| Legal, finance, high-ticket services | Enquiry | Consult booked, client signed |
From HighLevel natively, or any CRM by webhook, directly or through Zapier, Make or n8n. Each sale is matched to the ad click by click ID or hashed email and phone.
- A visitor clicks your ad. DataCops keeps the click ID on your own domain.
- The lead books, shows up or buys in your CRM, days or weeks later.
- DataCops finds the original click by click ID or hashed email and phone.
- The stage goes to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn, counted once.

Meta health and wellness restrictions
If you advertise a clinic, a treatment, a supplement or anything health related, Meta may restrict the events it accepts from you. What usually gets an account restricted is the data itself: the page link names the treatment, the event is called Book_Implant_Consult, the form sends symptoms.
With the gateway, this is not its job. It only carries Google tags, so your Meta setup, and everything it sends, stays yours to clean up by hand.
With DataCops, you switch on health mode. It sends only a short approved list and blocks everything else: hashed email and phone, the ad click, value, currency and order ID. Page links are cut to the domain and event names go neutral, so Lead becomes L_1. A field a clinic adds tomorrow is blocked by default.
Read more on Meta health and wellness restrictions.
Setup, step by step, side by side
Here is the same job done both ways. Gateway steps follow Google's and Cloudflare's setup guides. DataCops steps are what you do in the dashboard.
| The job | With the gateway | |
|---|---|---|
| Make tracking first-party | On Cloudflare: turn it on from the Google tag or GTM screen, sign in, pick domains. Elsewhere: a CDN setup or server-side tagging with a custom domain. Google tags only. | Add one script to your site head and one DNS record. Covers all four platforms. |
| Connect Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn | Not covered. Set up each platform's server-side API separately. | Connect each platform with one click. Fields and deduplication are handled. |
| Handle consent | Bring a consent banner, set up Consent Mode. | Switch on the built-in consent manager (IAB TCF v2.2). |
| Keep bots out | Not covered. | Switch on Real people only for each platform. |
| Send a CRM sale | Not covered. Build an offline import per platform. | Install once on HighLevel and pick the clients, or post the sale to your webhook. |
| Find out why a conversion is missing | Check each platform's own tools. | Open the delivery log row. The reason is written next to it. |
If you are already on Cloudflare and only run Google, the gateway setup is shorter than ours. That is worth saying plainly.
"15 minutes to get server-side tracking live. After 3 days failing with another app and a DIY server-side Google Tag Manager, that alone sold me. Then support jumped on a Google Meet with me on a Sunday afternoon to finish the job."Andrew Forsyth, Chief Executive Officer, Zeald

1. DataCops: best Google tag gateway alternative overall
DataCops does what the gateway does, first-party from your own domain, and does it for all four big ad platforms at once. Then it covers the rest of the chain: a bot verdict on every visit, a built-in consent manager, the stages after the form from your CRM, and a row per event that says what happened and why.
Why people switch to it
- Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn first-party too
- Real people only keeps bots out of each platform
- Booked, showed, won and paid from HighLevel or any CRM
- Consent manager included
Worth knowing
- Four ad platforms, no Microsoft Ads
- Real people only is off until you switch it on
- Costs money past 2,000 sessions; the gateway is free
Best for: advertisers who run beyond Google or sell after the form.

2. Stape: best for hosted server-side GTM
Stape hosts your server GTM container, and its custom loader serves GTM from your own domain, so it covers the gateway's job and more. Any platform with a server tag can be added, Meta and TikTok included. Bot Detection adds a score you use in your triggers.
The catch is the container. Everything inside it is yours to build and maintain, and the container pauses once usage passes 110% of your plan. See our Stape alternatives guide.
Why people switch to it
- Any destination with a server tag
- Custom loader for first-party GTM
- Low entry price
Worth knowing
- A container to build and maintain
- Bots and CRM stages are still your work
Best for: teams that want server-side GTM and have someone to build it.

3. Addingwell: best for GTM with people to call
Addingwell hosts server-side GTM with real humans on email, chat and phone, and the most generous free tier in this list. Like Stape, it can reach any platform your container has a tag for.
Extras add up: an extra container is 30 euros a month, an extra domain 10. And the container is still yours to build. See our Addingwell alternatives guide.
Why people switch to it
- 100,000 free requests a month
- Phone support
Worth knowing
- Extra containers and domains cost more
- Bots and CRM stages are still your work
Best for: teams that want server-side GTM and someone to call.

4. TAGGRS: best for cheaper GTM hosting in the EU
TAGGRS is a budget host for server-side GTM with EU hosting. If you want every platform first-party through GTM and keep costs low, it is the direct route.
Same trade as every GTM host: the tags, triggers and bot rules are yours to maintain, and you need someone who knows GTM.
Why people switch to it
- Low price per request
- EU hosting
Worth knowing
- Still a container to build
- Bots and CRM stages are still your work
Best for: server-side GTM on a budget.

5. Elevar: best for Shopify stores
Elevar is built around Shopify orders. It sends server-side events to several destinations, priced by orders rather than visits, with a 15-day trial on every plan.
It fits stores that sell online. If your sale closes on a call or in a CRM, or you are not on Shopify, it is the wrong shape. See our Elevar alternatives guide.
Why people switch to it
- Made for Shopify
- Priced per order
Worth knowing
- Shopify only
- High entry price for small stores
Best for: Shopify stores that sell online.
What you give up with DataCops
Fair question, so here is the straight answer.
- Free. The gateway costs nothing. DataCops is free only up to 2,000 sessions a month.
- Google's own path. The gateway is Google's product, supported by Google. DataCops sends to Google Ads as one of four platforms, not as Google.
- GA4. DataCops does not feed GA4. If first-party GA4 is your goal, the gateway does it and we do not.
- Other networks. No Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Snap or Pinterest.
You do not have to choose. Many sites run the gateway for GA4 and DataCops for ad conversions.
Running both, or moving over
- Add DataCops next to the gateway. One script and one DNS record. Leave the gateway on for GA4.
- Connect Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn first. These are the platforms the gateway never covered, so nothing overlaps.
- Pick one source for Google Ads conversions. DataCops creates its actions as secondary, so compare for two weeks before you make one primary and retire the old action.
- Connect your CRM (HighLevel or your webhook) to add the stages the gateway never saw.
- Switch on Real people only per platform once you trust the verdicts.
How to choose a Google tag gateway alternative
- Count your platforms. Only Google? Keep the gateway. Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn too? You need more than it gives.
- Check where your sales close. If they close in a CRM or on a call, you need the stages after the form.
- Look at your traffic. If bots fill your forms, a better route just delivers them better.
- Decide who builds. A GTM host means someone owns a container. DataCops means nobody does.
- Price the hours, not just the plan. Free plus a month of setup is not free.
Stay with Google tag gateway if
- You only advertise on Google and sell on the website.
- You are already on Cloudflare and want first-party Google tags for free.
- First-party GA4 is the main goal.
Pick DataCops if
- You also run Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn.
- Your sales close after the form: a booking, a call, a visit, a signed deal.
- You want bots kept out and consent handled without another vendor.
Every DataCops product mentioned here
- Offline conversions: CRM sales and stages back to your ads.
- HighLevel conversion tracking and DataCops for agencies.
- Server-side tracking and the no-GTM alternative.
- Meta Conversions API, Google Ads conversion tracking, TikTok Events API, LinkedIn Conversions API.
- Click fraud protection, SignupCops and first-party analytics.
- Consent manager, Ads Warmup and health mode.
Google tag gateway alternatives: FAQ
What is Google tag gateway?
Google tag gateway for advertisers serves Google's tags (gtag.js and GTM) from your own domain. Measurement hits go to your domain first and are then passed on to Google. Ad blockers and browsers see a first-party request instead of a call to a Google domain, so fewer Google hits get lost.
What is the best Google tag gateway alternative?
If you only run Google Ads and GA4, keep the gateway: it is free and it is Google. If you also run Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn, or your sales close in a CRM, DataCops covers the whole chain: first-party delivery to all four platforms, a bot verdict on every visit, a consent manager built in, and booked, showed, won and paid sent back to the ads.
Is Google tag gateway free?
Yes. Google does not charge for it, and Cloudflare says gateway requests are not billed to its CDN, WAF or Bot Management products. That is a real win. The cost sits elsewhere: the Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn setup it does not cover, the consent wiring, and the sales it never sees.
Does Google tag gateway work for Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn?
No. It serves Google tags only. Your Meta pixel, TikTok pixel and LinkedIn Insight Tag still load from their own domains and still get blocked. Each needs its own server-side setup, such as the Conversions API. DataCops sends first-party to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn from one script.
Does Google tag gateway filter bots?
We found no bot filtering in Google's gateway docs. It forwards what the Google tag sends, bot visits included. DataCops puts a verdict on every visit (bots, datacenter, VPN, proxy) and, with Real people only switched on for a platform, keeps flagged visits out of it.
Do I still need a consent banner with Google tag gateway?
Yes. The gateway changes where the tag loads from, not whether you may load it. You still need your own consent banner with Consent Mode. DataCops includes a first-party consent manager built on IAB TCF v2.2, and events wait for consent before they are sent.
Can I use Google tag gateway and DataCops together?
Yes. A common split is the gateway for GA4 and DataCops for ad conversions. If both send conversions to Google Ads, pick one source per conversion so nothing counts twice. DataCops creates its Google Ads actions as secondary, so they do not drive bidding until you make one primary.
Do I need Cloudflare for Google tag gateway?
Cloudflare is the one-click path, set up from inside the Google tag or GTM screen. Google also describes setup on other CDNs and through server-side tagging with a custom domain. DataCops needs no CDN change: one script and one DNS record on any site.
How much does DataCops cost?
Free up to 2,000 sessions. Business is $49 a month billed yearly ($59 monthly) for 50,000 sessions, Organization $299, and agency plans start at $199. A session is one visit, like in Google Analytics, and a new one starts after 30 minutes of no activity. Sessions past your plan are skipped until you upgrade or the month resets.
